Showtime-Jacobs vs. Quillin Poster

James_Porto_Showtime_Jacobs_v_Quillin_PosterWhat a thrilling assignment from Showtime! The challenge was to create a photorealistic composite of Daniel Jacobs and Peter Quillin portrayed as giants battling high above downtown Brooklyn. Billed as the Battle for Brooklyn, these two warriors are poised for a legendary face-off to settle the score once and for all. Capturing the background was accomplished with a helicopter charter at sunset  over the East River and the contenders were photographed in a makeshift studio in the Times Square Millennium Hotel. I am deeply grateful to Showtime and creative director Ethan Callender for calling me in for this exciting and satisfying project.

At-Edge interview-Is it REAL or is it Porto?

James_Porto_Atedge_blog_interview_Real_Cost_FDA_Anti-Smoking_Campaign_Monsters_Legacy_Effects_Jackie_Anzaldi_025At-Edge, the monumental photo industry sourcebook that features only 155 select photographers in their illustrious collection of global photographic talent, has honored me with a blog interview. It features the latest major project I was involved with, The Real Cost, a nationwide anti-smoking campaign awarded by FCB NY ad agency and their client the Food and Drug Administration. It also delves into several other projects that I’ve been involved with lately (Powder, Overload, and  Rockettes); this is some serious eye candy folks, don’t miss it, feel free to check it out here, and of course share if you are inspired.

Anti-Smoking Monster Campaign

James_Porto_Real_Cost_FDA_Anti-Smoking_Campaign_Monsters_Legacy_Effects_Jackie_Anzaldi_001When Jackie Anzaldi and Mike Lubrano from FCB/Garfinkel NYC called us for FDA’s Nationwide Anti-Smoking Campaign it instantly seemed a strong possibility for a great project. I am thrilled to share the final results of our collaboration; The Real Cost Campaign is running in most major markets across the country as large posters in Bus Shelters and in Subways.  It is designed to dissuade young people from starting cigarette smoking and to remind others how toxic and dangerous nicotine addiction is.  The Monsters were created by the most amazing effects company I’ve ever worked with, Legacy Effects.

The Fight is Tonight!

Don’t miss the epic showdown tonight at 9pm, Dec. 1, 2012, between Miguel Cotto and Austin Trout on Showtime!  I met both of these gentlemen to do their portrait and tonight they will meet in the ring in Madison Square Garden.  Anything can happen so don’t you dare miss it! I turned the corner at 33rd St. and 10th Ave. and happened upon this billboard.  I have to say, even after 27 years of shooting, I still get a thrill seeing my pictures reproduced this massively.

Miguel Cotto vs. Austin Trout

Another great assignment working with the Showtime creative team to photograph the poster for the epic, upcoming boxing match, Miguel Cotto vs. Austin Trout.  “Showdown: Cotto vs. Trout” is a 12 round battle between Four-Time and Three-Division World Champion Miguel Cotto and WBA Super Welterweight World Champion Austin Trout taking place on December 1 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.  Meeting and photographing these talented and fearsome athletes was exhilarating but I’m glad they were scheduled separately; wouldn’t want them to engage in a pre-match altercation in my studio.  I recommend tuning into Showtime at 9pm on Dec. 1 to witness the action.

San Francisco Towers

San Francisco Towers is a luxurious senior living community located right in the middle of San Francisco.  I was commissioned by Tim Paschke and Jeremiah Wright of Resin Global to execute their vision of an image that combined several of San Francisco’s iconic landmarks into a single image.  What a great assignment it was to photograph my second favorite city in the USA and then solve the puzzle of this composite.  It was both fun and challenging.

Subway Love at Photoshop.com

This image, Subway Love, was made as a portfolio piece.  Adobe Systems is featuring the image at Photoshop.com as the 4th image in the slideshow through February.  I guess they thought it would align well with Valentine’s Day.  I am honored and grateful that they chose my work because their software has been central to my image making for 20 years.  I’m still amazed at what this incredible program can do with images; it helps turn my dreams into realities.

Humira Campaign

It’s not often that when you are asked to do a pharmaceutical campaign for a psoriasis medication you get to create a series of surreal photo illustrated nudes.  So it was a wonderful surprise when Medicus called for the Humira project and assigned me to do just that.  Nudes are my favorite subject so the project was a joy, with the only downside being that we had to add makeup to simulate psoriasis on the models skin, but at the end of the day, that was the primary purpose of the images.
